Contagion

Contagion is a bad snail, a very bad snail.

There was uproar after his first 1000 to 1 heat when he killed the first four snails who crossed the line ahead of him, making him the default winner. When several more spectators in the small rural village complained about his “cheating”, he killed them as well. Contagion benefitted greatly from the relative obscurity of his home trial and the apathy with which most people in The Legion clan view the first of the three heats.

He wouldn’t have gotten away with killing fellow competitors in the second heat as round two drew too many spectators/witnesses. However, the adjudicator disqualified seven of the eight competitors in his heat making Contagion the winner, again by default. The adjudicator had to be escorted out of the arena by Police escortgo. A reporter who claimed to have pictures of Contagion handing a bag with $ on the side of it to the adjudicator hasn’t been seen for several weeks.

The final heat was the greatest farce in the history of the Legion clan’s 1000to1s. With only minutes before the race was due to start, Contagion was the only snail on the Starting Line. When Fred Vegas, the winner of the Kung district, arrived with only seconds to spare, the look of panic and rage on Contagion’s face was clear for everyone to see. But Vegas was evidently suffering from something. He was slow, clumsy and there was a lot of unpleasant stuff coming out of him. Still, he nearly beat Contagion, but in the end, it was just too much for him. Contagion won, with a time of fourteen minutes and 43 seconds – the slowest time to win any 1000-1 in the history of the sport. All the other competitors were suffering the same symptoms as Vegas, they were even too sick to make the starting line.

The people of The Legion clan demanded that their high council intervene and hold the race again when the competitors were in better health, but the council refused. They were pleased with Contagion’s ruthlessness. They took care of anyone who complained too vociferously. Snails could disappear so easily.
